To choose a replacement printer timing belt, match the complete specification—not just the printer brand or the belt length. You need the drive location, tooth profile, pitch, tooth count or pitch length, width, and whether the original is a closed loop or an open belt with clamped ends.

The important distinction

2GT and S2M both have a nominal 2 mm pitch, but that does not prove they fit the same pulley. MXL is 2.032 mm, not exactly 2 mm. Photograph the original marking and confirm the mating pulley specification before choosing a substitute.

This guide is for UV, DTF and large-format printer owners, technicians and parts buyers who are identifying a replacement. It is not a universal belt-removal procedure. Access, tensioning and post-repair calibration depend on the exact machine.

Where a Timing Belt Is Used—and What It Does

A printer can contain more than one belt. Identifying the mechanism is the first purchasing check: a small closed-loop transmission belt is not automatically a replacement for the long belt along the carriage rail.

Moves the printhead carriage

In a belt-driven carriage system, the drive transfers motor movement to the carriage. Record the attachment method and full belt route from the model documentation.

Media drive

Transfers movement to feeding parts

Some machines use a belt in the media-feed transmission. It is not the pinch roller or a film conveyor; identify the actual driven shaft.

Auxiliary drive

Operates a separate mechanism

A smaller loop may belong to another drive, such as a model-specific maintenance mechanism. Its location and part code must be confirmed separately.

These are possible system roles, not a map of your printer. The belts below are selected by specification; none is presented as fitting every UV or DTF machine. Check 1 / Tooth family

MXL, 2GT, S2M or HTD 3M?

The letters identify a tooth-profile family; pitch describes the spacing between adjacent tooth centers. A belt that appears to sit in a pulley can still have the wrong geometry. Check the belt and pulley as a matched system.

  • Copy all letters, hyphens and numbers from the old belt without reinterpreting them.
  • If a seller uses “GT2” loosely, ask for the exact profile, pitch and pulley match.
  • Use a clear close-up for preliminary identification; obtain the manufacturer specification when the profile is uncertain.
Check 2 / Closed-loop length

Count Teeth Instead of Guessing the Circumference

For a closed-loop belt with a confirmed pitch, the nominal pitch length follows from the tooth count:

Pitch length = number of teeth × tooth pitch

For example, the store's 320-2GT option with 160 teeth corresponds to 160 × 2 mm = 320 mm pitch length. The HTD 297-3M option with 99 teeth corresponds to 99 × 3 mm = 297 mm. These are identification examples, not recommendations for a particular printer.

The pitch line lies within the belt. A tape wrapped around the outside measures a different path, so an outside circumference should not be treated as the nominal pitch length. See the dimensional definitions in the Gates drive-design manual, printed page 9.

  1. Work with a belt already removed safely by the model-specific procedure.
  2. Choose a recognizable starting tooth and count once around the complete loop, without stretching it.
  3. Repeat the count and record the result separately from the printed code.
  4. If teeth or pieces are missing, stop treating the count as reliable; obtain the original part specification.
Do not decode every listing number the same way. Depending on the series, a number may describe a nominal length, an imperial designation or a supplier code. If the code, stated tooth count and calculated length disagree, ask for clarification before payment.
Check 3 / Width and construction

Measure Across the Belt, Then Confirm the Loop Type

Preparing to measure width: the jaws are still open in this illustration. Close them gently against both side edges before taking a reading. Measure across the belt—not tooth height, the space between belt runs, or loop diameter—and compare your reading with the original specification.

  • Measure an undamaged section across the width without crushing the rubber.
  • If an edge is badly frayed, compare several intact sections and confirm the nominal width from the part record.
  • Check the original construction: an endless loop and open-ended belt with clamps are different purchasing choices.
  • Record any required backing, reinforcement or special environmental specification from the machine documentation.

Do not choose a wider belt simply because the product page offers it. The selected width must suit the original drive, pulley faces and any clamps. Equally, do not buy an arbitrary open-belt length and assume it can replace a closed loop.

For an open-ended carriage belt, ask for the specified cut length and clamping requirements. The closed-loop tooth-count example above does not determine how much material is needed at the clamped ends.

When to Stop and Use a Technician

Do not reach into a powered drive, bypass a guard, pry a belt over a pulley or force the carriage by hand. Isolate the equipment as its service procedure requires. Repeated edge damage, damaged pulleys or a belt that will not seat need inspection, not more force.

There is no universal printer belt tension value. Use the machine's specified method and setting; “tight enough by feel” is not a substitute. Follow its required alignment, tension and calibration checks before returning to production.

Before Ordering: Send One Complete Fitment Record

A useful inquiry contains the information needed to distinguish variants. “A black belt for my DTF printer” is not enough, even if the product photo looks similar.

  1. Machine: brand, exact model and revision or machine label photo.
  2. Location: which mechanism it drives, plus a safe photo of the original route or the relevant parts-diagram page.
  3. Identity: original part number and a readable full belt marking.
  4. Dimensions: confirmed profile and pitch, counted teeth or documented pitch length, and measured width.
  5. Construction: closed loop or open ends, clamp details where applicable, and any special material requirement.
  6. Reason for replacement: broken teeth, edge wear, a snapped belt or the exact symptom—plus any recent service work.

Printer Timing Belt FAQ

Can I replace MXL with a 2 mm timing belt?

Do not assume so. MXL has a 2.032 mm pitch and its own profile; confirm the original belt and pulley specification instead of rounding the pitch.

Are 2GT and S2M interchangeable?

Matching 2 mm pitch is not enough to establish interchangeability. Use the required tooth-profile family and obtain an explicit belt-to-pulley match for your drive.

Does 320-2GT mean 320 teeth?

Not for the 320-2GT option linked here: it is listed with 160 teeth, which gives a 320 mm pitch length at 2 mm pitch. Verify the listing's full designation rather than applying one naming rule to all belt families.

Will a new timing belt fix carriage noise?

Only if the belt is the relevant fault and the rest of the drive is sound. Record the symptom and have the mechanism checked; this guide does not diagnose a motor, sensor or alignment fault from noise alone.

What if the old belt code has rubbed off?

Send the printer model, drive location, tooth and edge photos, width, loop type and a reliable tooth count if possible. If those details do not establish the profile, wait for a parts-record or technician confirmation before buying.
