The safest answer is simple: do not choose UV printing pretreatment by appearance alone. Glass, bare metal, painted metal, acrylic and polypropylene can need different preparation, and even two batches sold under the same material name may have different surface treatments.

Identify the actual substrate and finish, follow the coating and ink supplier instructions, then approve a small sample before coating or printing production items.

Glass

Confirm the glass construction and finish

Flat glass, coated glass, mirrors and finished drinkware should not be treated as one identical surface. Confirm the item and its intended use before choosing a test process.

Metal

Separate bare metal from coated metal

Aluminum, stainless steel, anodized panels, paint and powder coating present different bonding surfaces. The top finish—not only the metal underneath—matters.

Acrylic

Check grade, finish and cleaner compatibility

Acrylic can vary by manufacturing method, coating and surface condition. Test the approved cleaner and pretreatment on an offcut before touching the final item.

PP

Ask whether the surface was already treated

Use a fresh, substrate-approved cleaning method on a small coupon. A cleaner that is acceptable for one material may damage or haze another.

Use One Repeatable Sample Process

Prepare an offcut from the real substrate batch

Do not approve a process on a generic sample if production will use a different coating, finish or supplier batch.

Clean only with an approved method

Remove dust, oil and handling contamination without assuming one solvent is safe for every plastic, coating or finished item. Allow the surface to reach the condition specified by the supplier.

Match the pretreatment to the substrate

Follow the current product instructions for application, handling, drying or curing. Do not mix coatings or substitute a glass, metal, acrylic or PP product simply because the bottles look similar.

Keep the artwork, ink layers, pass mode and curing setup consistent across comparison samples so only the intended variable changes.

Check the supplier's test timing. A result observed immediately after printing may not represent the approved production condition.

Ink beads or pulls away

This may point to contamination, wetting or surface-treatment issues. Recheck the actual surface and preparation before increasing ink.

Print lifts during tape checking

Pretreatment choice, cleaning, coating application, ink layering, curing or test timing may all contribute. Change one variable at a time.

Cracking on a flexible item

The ink or coating system may not match the flexing requirement. A rigid flat coupon cannot approve a process for a part that will bend.

Cloudiness, haze or surface marks

Stop and check cleaner and coating compatibility. Do not continue on production pieces when the substrate itself is being altered.
